Music is not Art

Thank You , Thank You, Thank You to everyone who came together to make Shangri-la a successful event. Even with the newly incorporated traveling aspect of the event, we managed to raise over $600 for the Grace Church Feed the Hungry Breakfast Program last Saturday. I wanted to especially thank Christine Goodman from Art House for letting us use their lovely space and the Lamp Post for hosting the last 4 bands and the dance party. Thanks to Norm for the lights, Ken for cooking. Orlando, Kayt, Tim and Joseph for reorganizing the garage. Brooks for helping with sound and finally , I'd also like to thank the Fire Academy for bestowing us with the Best Performance in a Unnecessary Drama Award.

This Friday is JC Friday. a full listing of events is at http://www.jcfridays.com/. The Mary Benson Gallery (not listed), will also be open from 7 to 11 pm with September Selects a group show (see flyer to right) After all of the wine glasses and cheese plates are empty, 58 will be open from 10 pm to 11 pm to view the Trust Your Struggle "of Love and Riots". If you are all arted out on Friday. Stop by on Saturday Night for the closing party. It runs from 7 to 11 pm , or as stated on their flyer "until someone passes out. " Timmy no repeat performance thank you. Wear something nice, they will be filming.

As always, you can catch a local band NOT PLAYING in Jersey City tonight. Both the Special Moves and Houston McCoy are playing at Lit Lounge in New York. On Saturday, The Milwaulkees celebrate their record release of American Anthems at Maxwell's. PATHS THAT CROSS : Photography Show at 313 Gallery

The work reflects the artists finding their own space in this song to create and reflect. 17 Year Cicada - New Works by Kayt Hester

SAT 08/24 @ 9pm Port-o- Lounge he 17 Year Cicada – New Art Work by Kayt Hester – opens August 24th at Port- O Lounge, one of the handful of downtown Jersey City restaurants/art galleries that, by presenting to new audiences, up & coming and established local artists, are transforming the New York Metropolitan area Art World. As the title of the exhibition suggests, this edition of the yearly Hester Summer Showcase coalesces around the theme of Magicada Cicadas – the species of cicadas that only appear every 17 years. Her more recent work also expands her use of texture and color. Augmenting her black masking tape are new, extraordinary details made of brightly colored, metallic tape. She also has incorporated embroidery to canvases, essentially embedding 21st century needlepoint within her tape illustrations.

58 Gallery Reunion Show

Opening F 6 to 9 pm Mary Benson Galleryey everybody, there once was this place called 58 gallery in dtjc showed some of the best art around by some of the best emerging artist around, it coupled the shows with sounds and visuals "that would create an atmosphere unlike any in nyc" holland cotter ny times...and it did a bunch of other things to strengthen the artist community between 2002-2012. it closed in 2012. some of the pioneers and trendsetters of that time are gathering for the start of this amazing series of shows. stay tuned for more info. www.fifty8.com

The Attic Ensemble Presents

Nov 7 to 18h @ Barrow Mansion | August, 1949. A fascinatingly realistic picture of routine cases brought into a bustling metropolitan police station in the course of an evening. Out of the welter of human misery, vice and foolishness there emerges the moving case of a decent young man who has stolen money from his employer; a hardened criminal dragging his young friend down with him; a lawless NJ "gardener" with a corrupt lawyer; and others. In the throes of the tumult is Detective McLeod -- a man whose black & white vision of justice will be challenged by the woman he loves most: his wife. A cast of 22 men and women will bring this drama of truth and consequences to life on the stage.
