Life isn't about showing up - it's about setting up

Here's the update. Please Note: Somethings already happened.

Thank you to those of you who answered my call for help in my metaphorical kitchen of promotion and organizing. By far, the best response was an offer of a pannini press. I don't know if I am ready to move in on the hot sandwich market yet, you can sample my herring sandwiches at the Amsterdance party this Saturday and let me know. We'll be setting up Friday and Saturday if you can lend a hand let me know. asusco@smithmullin.com . In addition to my freak out, DJ Street Justice (05/01) and Jesse (05/08) will be covering my DJ duties at the Lamp Post until I return on (05/15) .Then, we will be rotating our slots so we don't stale up on you.

On Wednessay, Melissa Surach and Her Blackhole will be back at 58. Whale Sex, Magic, Musical Comedy and a closing performance by the Coffin Daggers are all on tap. Doors are at 8 pm, don't be late !! this is a fine line-up and we also need to get the band started early.

On Saturday, we have the second Annual Amsterdance Party. Celebrating Holland's Biggest Holiday of Queen's Day . Things start at 8pm with live music from with the Emergency Party (BKLN), the Chantigs (SF,CA), Shell Shag (CD Release) and WJ and the Sweet Sacrifice (JC) . $10 donation before 11 pm, $5 for the dance party afterwards with DJ's Johny Astronaut, DJ Soul and DJ Lex . Share the love and wear some orange. The Mext Holiday is Cinco de Mayo, with performaces by Sounds of Greg D, double-breasted, and Chris Harford and the Band of Changes, ay dios mio !

How would you like your apartment to star in a film ? We’re looking for a great apartment for a short film shooting this June/July (2 day weekend shoot in this location).SWIMMING LESSONS is a film about two girls whose idiosyncratic methods of coping with life bring them face to face in a moment that will forever change their relationship. A stylized character piece that moves from quiet to cacophonous, SWIMMING LESSONS explores how relationships can help us heal, and how friendship can be unexpected. We need one great apartment to double for two locations. The apartment needs to have a fire escape off of the bedroom or a fire escape off of a living room that could look like a bedroom. Exposed ceiling beams a huge plus. We’re going to be a small, respectful crew with a fun set. We’re also very low budget, so while we cannot offer any pay, we can offer compensation for electricity. In addition, we would love for the apartment owners to attend both our fundraising and wrap parties, and to receive credit in the film as well as a DVD copy. This is a great opportunity to be involved in New York’s indie film scene and help a passionate group of artists see their project through! email Jen Dougherty ----jen.sinkorswim@gmail.com

Flaming Fire at Free WFMU Southpaw Party on Sat!
Body:
WFMU SHOWCASE SHOW -- IT'S FREE!FLAMING FIRE (10 PM SHARP)THE MAJOR STARSJONATHAN KANE'S FEBRUARY (swan's co-founder's new band)DJ/RUPTURE W/DANIEL PERLIN (big euro superstar, did John Peel show a couple times)Saturday, April 28125 Fifth Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC(Between Sterling Place and St. Johns Place)9 PM * 8 PM Doors * $0Hi, Guess What?Good Charlotte, Franz Ferdinand and Jennifer Lopez all chipped in to buy you (and everyone else in NYC) a ticket for the next Flaming Fire show this Saturday at the WFMU Showcase. True! It's just their way of saying, sorry we suck and you had to listen to us. You can read the detailed explanation below*, or just accept it on faith that J-Lo and WFMU loves you, and show up for free to an awesome showcase party at Southpaw this Saturday! We're really thrilled to be playing with The Major Stars, Jonathan Kane's February and DJ/Rupture (w/ accompanying video by Daniel Perlin) -- we go on at 10 PM sharp.Because, we're so excited about this show, we've written A LOT of new songs for it, and we hope you like them. We'll also do a couple of old favorites that we haven't played in a while.Details below, see you on Saturday!Love,PatrickTHE MAJOR STARS:We played with the Major Stars once before for a private party far away, and saw more types of exotic amazing dubious substances than we knew existed. It was astounding. People were eating experimental day-glo slime invented earlier that afternoon, poured into their mouths by robots, and then dancing around in coconut bras, in a huge synchronized dance. This is really true. The Major Stars were awesome that night. They play a big heavy super ROCK ROCK ROCK sound that had all the bombed coconut bra-people crawling around on the ceiling.http://www.myspace.com/themajorstarsFLAMING FIRE:" The Brooklyn-based collective Flaming Fire is more like an evangelical church congregation than like a conventional rock group, with its leader, Patrick Hambrecht, in the role of preacher and the other members (including his wife, Kate) as his loyal followers. The group's songs pair deceptively simple Residents-like riffs and occasional bursts of noise with fearsome, Biblical-sounding group chants and call-and-response singing. Most refreshing are Hambrecht's seriousness and fervor. (The band's sense of irony is limited to the darker variety -- 'Kill the Right People,' one refrain goes.)" -The New Yorkerhttp://myspace.com/flamingfireJONATHAN KANE'S FEBRUARYJonathan Kane started the Swans with Gira and is a big NYC legend. He hits the drums REALLY HARD, and he'll be playing with his new band February, who are supposed to be incredible.http://www.myspace.com/jonathankaneDJ RUPTURE:You won't find another musician as agile and reckless as DJ /rupture. He's performed in over 25 countries, released records on Soul Jazz & Tigerbeat6, DJ'ed in a band with Norah Jones, done two John Peel Sessions, and was turntable soloist with the 80-member Barcelona Symphony Orchestra.http://myspace.com/deejayrupture* See, J-Lo's record company paid tons and tons of cash to get her record played nationally, but sort of secretly so it seemed like people actually liked it, and then Elliot Spitzer sued the record companies of J-Lo and Good Charlotte and Franz Ferdinand for millions of dollars for making NYC radio suck, so all the record companies had to pay a small fortune in a settlement, and Spitzer gave the money to nice non-profits like WFMU, and they've decided to organize a whole bunch of free shows, and we're playing their inaugural free-a-thon!

Broken Fingers, Bad Vibes and Mason Dixon
This week.Saturday Night finds DJ Billy Filo infront of the Cigarette Machine and behind the wheels of steel.Off in the corner, you'll find the sweet/sick sounds of Mason Dixon playing some live rock 'n roll.Guest appearance by DJ Knees (or someone) quite possible. You'll just have to be there to see it for yourself.See ya.

Timeless Romance at the Loew’s Jersey – Fri-Sat, Apr 27-28
Posted by: "solan" mailto:loewsjersey@gmail.com?Subject=solan

The joy of finding love is equaled in intensity only by the despair offearing that it is not meant to last. Little wonder, then, that someof the finest literature and greatest movies are about lovetranscending time. This month, the LandmarkLoew's Jersey presents three of the most legendary such films.Friday, April 27 at 8PMWuthering HeightsStarring Laurence Olivier & Merle Oberon. Directed by William Wyler.(1939, 110mins.)Though repeatedly re-made, this is considered the definitive versionof Emily Bronte's classic novel. Olivier and Oberon give outstandingperformances in this story of love, loss and time. The legendaryscreen-writing team of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur wrote thescript, with uncredited input from John Huston. A timeless classicnot to be missed by lovers of film.Saturday, April 28: Portrait of JennieMatinee at 2:30PMEncore screening at 6:30PMStarring Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Ethel Barrymore. Directed byWilliam Dieterle. (1949, 86 mins.)A story of love and a rift in time, Portrait of Jennie is bothtouching and haunting, and the kind of film that stays with you forever. Mostly overlooked when released, it is now considered a greatromantic fantasy and one of Selznick's best films. It boastswonderful performances by Jennifer Jones (arguably her finest work),Joseph Cotton, Ethel Barrymore and others, beautiful cinematographythat includes outstanding, on location views of wintry New York, and ahaunting score. Don't miss this rear chance to see this classic onthe big screen.Saturday, April 28 at 8:40PMSomewhere In TimeStarring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer.(1980, 103mins.) Anyone who has ever fallen in love against long odds will embrace thisstory of love in defiance of time itself. Made in 1980, the film wasa throwback to the kind of romantic fantasies made decades earlier(such as Portrait of Jennie), having few special effects and relyinginstead on the chemistry of its cast. Seymore and Reeve make one ofthe screen's most memorable couples. Reeve's performance is all themore memorable and touching given his tragically shortened career. Like Portrait of Jennie thirty years before, this movie was paned andignored when released. But in the years since, it has built anear-cult following, and is considered a modern romantic classic. Each screening is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors & children 12 yearsold and younger. Combo discounts for two or more screenings areavailable. For directions or more information, call (201) 798-6055 or visit www.loewsjersey.org.

Dear Friends,
I want to invite to two upcoming shows that I have work in. On Saturday, April 28 from 4 to 8pm is the
opening for C L O U D N I N E. I will have numerous

As you can guess from the subject of this email, I am moving to Brooklyn as of April 30th. I’ve lived in Jersey City for almost 16 years. They were formative, eventful, interesting, stimulating, trying, traumatic, fun….But its time for a change. I hope I can see some of you at one of the openings.

Still tickin...
Hello folks. It's Lex. It's been a while since my last update. I've just been a bit tied up with several things but rest assured I'm still active. I have some shows lined up for my the gallery. In addition to art exhibits I've scheduled some musical events. There's also now a new addition to the 143 Columbus family. The Waterbug Freeform Open Mic Thursdays is still going strong. The entries below are additions and changes to the info on my website. I'll be updating the event calendar page on the site by the end of the weekend.
Read below for more details.

HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE EXPERIMENTAL JAZZ SERIES: (Friday, May 5 - 25)
Over the last several years, Jersey City has distinguished itself as an important center for the arts not only locally but globally. Its numerous galleries and arts centers - and the support both receive from local audiences - are a testament to a thriving arts scene right across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan. As a result, more and more artists of every variety are increasingly making Jersey City their home. This is notably true for practicioners of experimental jazz and improvised music. As the number of spaces within the greater metropolitan area that feature this music in performance have shrunk dramatically in the last few years, musicians increasingly are turning to self-promoted events to keep this vital music alive and in front of live audiences. For four Saturdays in May, four Jersey City-based will be stoking the fires of creative music right in their hometown.
Line-up:
May 5: James Keepnews (guitar/laptop/electronics) - featuring Daniel Carter on reeds, flute and trumptet, and Tim Keiper on drums and percuission.
May 12: Saris - JC resident Harris Eisenstadt on drums, featuring Sara Schoenbeck on bassoon, with special guest Eivind Opsvik on bass.
May 19: Tone Collector - JC resident Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone, Eivind Opsvik on bass, Jeff Davis on drums, with special guest Ben Gerstein on trombone.
May 25: Jason Kao Hwang / EDGE - JC resident Jason Kao Hwang on violin, featuring Ken Filiano on bass, Andrew Drury on drums, and special guest Steve Swell on trombone.
