This blog is updated only once every 4 years

Thanks to everyone who came out to Damien's 25th birthday and Fundraiser for Cambodian Street Children. This event raised over $1,8000 for charity. Damien made one hell of a birthday present for 2,400 children that will be fed with that money. Renata also told me that the Threads Fashion Show had to turn away people at the JC Museum on Sunday.

There are a couple of things going on that could use some charitable help. Heather Warfel is looking for large picture frames to be used for an upcoming dance project in here words

" The Dance Program I direct at County Prep High School is busy preparing for our annual dance concert. As part of this year’s theme, we are looking to collect a large number of picture frames to incorporate into the set and use as props. We specifically need very large frames (at least 24” x 24” or larger) and 5”x7” frames. The color/style/condition does not matter (even really old or falling apart is fine!), and we need only the frame (no glass or backing). If you have frames you can donate (preferable) or loan for the months of March, April, & May it would be GREATLY appreciated. I can arrange to pick them up from you as well. Thanks so much!! -Heather 201.396.1737 you can also contact her crowhandmade@hotmail.com .

Amy closed up Janam on Sunday and is readying herself for her trip out West. Wednesday and Thursday you can help her move by buying a variety of wares. She'll be at the Tea Shop and across the street at her apartment. As per Amy :

Oh smack, I have been so busy, I didn't mention that Art House Production Founder and Holder of the Key to JC, Christine Goodman is offering acting classes. This is a 5 week course and it's not too late to turn your passive aggressive persona into a dominant bi-polar maniac (or another option listed in the Psychologist's' Diagnosis of Personality Disorders) . http://www.arthouseproductions.org/

Friday, Feb. 298:00 PM - Now, VoyagerStarring Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains. Directed by IrvingRapper.(1942, 117mins. Pre-dates the rating system, but is suitable for mostaudiences.)One of Bette Davis' most adored pictures, "Now, Voyager" is the storyof one woman's self-actualizing discovery of inner strength andtransformation through love from a dowdy, neurotic wall-flower. Davisgave a masterful performance showcasing her signature forcefulness aswell as her capacity for romantic gentleness. The supporting cast isalso superb. The movie includes the legendary scene of Henreid'sneatly suggestive lighting of two cigarettes.Saturday, March 13:00 PM - JezebelStarring Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, George Brent, Fay Bainter. Directedby William Wyler.(1938, 105mins. Pre-dates the rating system, but is suitable for mostaudiences.)Bette Davis, in one of the best remembered of her many memorableroles, plays Julie, a headstrong woman who loses her fiancé bycreating a public scandal. This melodrama plays out against the film'sstudy of the conventions and gender roles of The Old South. The filmsucceeds because of Davis' steely performance and elegant productionvalues. Davis won her second Best Actress Oscar for her role.7:45 PM - What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?Starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Directed by Robert Aldrich(1962, 132mins. Pre-dates the rating system, but may not be suitablefor young audiences.)The well known real-life animosity between Bette Davis and JoanCrawford was put to exquisite on-camera use in this gothic andsometimes campy exercise in psychological terror. Davis is "Baby Jane"Hudson, a former child star who is embittered by the later, greatersuccess of her sister Blanche (Crawford) as a top movie star. Blancheis crippled in a car accident and Jane is extremely resentful athaving to take care of her in their decaying L.A. mansion. As Janeschemes to make a comeback in show business, Blanche becomesincreasingly desperate to get out of her demented sister's control.Davis was never afraid to take on characters that were unattractive orunsympathetic, and her performance here is as courageous as it isunforgettable. "Baby Jane" has become a cult classic, but it is,fundamentally, a skillful, well-performed nail-biter.PLUS - In Grand Movie Palace style: Audiences for each screening ofthe Bette Davis tribute will enjoy live "entrance music" played on theLoew's Wonder Morton pipe organ! Each screening is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors & children 12 yearsold and younger. Combo discounts are available for multiplescreenings. Doors will open 40 minutes prior to each of the above showtimes.

Just wanted to say again, think this'll be fun. I understand this is not silly robot band shenanigans, as you may have heard of in the past, but very SERIOUS important robot musical shenanigans. These robots apply for their own grants, automatically. They get residencies on the moon. Patrick

Friends,I've got some fun news. We're doing two shows this weekend. The first is on Friday the 29th (leap year day) at the Charleston Bar, in Brooklyn, right off the Bedford stop on the L train. Free show at an awesome bar (free pizza with your booze), starts at 10pm, and features our friends The Press and The Imperialists. On Saturday night we're rocking Buddie's Tavern in Parlin, NJ with SixToEightMathematics and Mazeffect, another pair of great bands, which will be a lot of fun. That show starts at 9:30pm.We ordered a new round of the pink flame t-shirts, this time in Men's sizes, too, because so many of you boys want to look hot like the girls! The other bit of good news is that we've gotten a little bit of radio play on the greatest radio station in the world, WFMU, and we'll be playing a live set on Pat Duncan's show in May before we go on tour. The World is Sinking - and will go under at 9 pm tonight

OK, since I haven't been able to get my blog out before Babyhole (tonight @ 9pm).
This one is just for you, Mellisa, sweet Gynocult Leader.

Babyhole, is a not-for-poets open mike comedy night. There is usually a musical guest, and she also books comdians whom range from stand up to sketch.

As a special incentive to the ladies, Mellisa is throwing in a secret prize (most likely a pregnancy kit from the 99 cent store) for the first female open mike performer. (see message below)

BabyHole has been running since September and no woman has ever signed up for the open mic. Just guys who don't seem to get laid.So the first lady to sign up for BabyHole Open Mic (for stand up, sketch and musical comedy) will win a prize. I don't know what yet, but it will probably include a bottle of champagne that I'll be forced to drink by myself if no woman signs up by 9:30 pm.

Don't worry about Mellisa drinking alone though, word on the street is that she has a bun in the oven.

Howdy! Flaming Fire is playing in Brooklyn on Friday and Hoboken on Saturday! We're going to have TWO crazed and revelrous CD release parties for "Kentucky Shroud," the album that we're releasing with WFMU's help--they're our first shows around home since last summer! Hope you can make it, the other bands are really amazing: Dragons of Zynth, Beat Circus, American Watercolor Movement, Jared Whitham, Unicornicopia, Nat Benjamin from the Flesh. We have three new members, musicians we've been fans of forever--Polly Watson from Crimson Sweet, Chris Talsnes from Tra La La, and Stirling Krusing of Marianne Nowottny. FF fzar Zach Layton will be doing futuristic, crazy kinetic projections. We're gonna drink a lot and party down with you guys, and it's gonna be a blast. Also, the Maxwell's show is one of the few 18 and up shows we've done in a while, which will be nice. See you this weekend! Love,Patrick P.S. If you want to order our album, you can. Try it on iTunes or get one of those old fashioned CDs at flamingfire.com. This experimental pop project has manifested itself as everything from a full length musical, complete with 14 singing dancing puppeteers, to one-woman electronic sound sculpture. Natalie wants very much to use all sorts of noises and beats and colors to turn people on to Jesus and emotion!" http://www.myspace.com/unicornicopia MC JARED WHITHAMRecent Florida transplant to Jersey City Jared Whitham has performed with rock bands far and wide. He makes us jump up and down and clap like 4-year-olds! His performances in the past have included teleportation, songs about extra-dimensional theme restaurants and puppetry. He is currently finishing up the first season of "The Jared Whitham Show," featuring acts like Carla Rhodes, Dame Darcy, Marianna Nowottony, and Flaming Fire. The series is produced by Nick Zedd and Stephen Connolly of Pothole Skinny. Whitham has also filmed over 5,000 hours of Florida garage sales. ZACH LAYTONLayton is a genius from the future who creates really cool-looking projections through technological means so advanced, you will never understand how he does it. Layton explains: "My intention is to use sound as a form finding technique which will be represented in 2 dimensional space in the form of video projections as well as a series of large format prints, in 3 dimensional virtual space, and ultimately in 3 dimensional physical space. Through the use of CNC milling and printing machines, this technique has made it possible to execute and physicalize these advanced geometries. The topology of the air which is imprinted by the index of sound will be represented and left as a physical trace in the surface topology of the chosen materials, (which will show a heavy emphasis towards reflective materials). Kinetic 2 dimensional forms created through the process will be projected against the physical assemblage, creating a hybrid form of sculpture, cinema and sound." SATURDAY:DRAGONS OF ZYNTH"I've been asked a bunch of times, by various friends and loved ones who hear me do nothing but hype these guys, what exactly Dragons of Zynth's sounds like. The task is hopeless: "Coronation Thieves" is just one of those albums that lives inside its own twisted metaverse, where free jazz and neo-soul collide with late-'60s psychedelia and punk to form what in the end is an utterly unique experience. " - Karl Birmelin, Prefix Magazine AMERICAN WATERCOLOR MOVEMENT" : The Mustachio Suite
NAT BENJAMIN (OF THE FLESH)The Flesh: "Orgasm-inducing" (VICE)...."Their unique mix of post-punk techniques, gothic aesthetics, new romantic flavours, and pretty much any other style of music they've ever gobbled up in their collective subconscious, is their ace in the hole...a thoroughly enticing lot." (ALTERNATIVE ULSTER UK)..."The Flesh has produced a distinct sound, both beautifully soulful, funky, and a bit creepy." (CNN) " FLAMING FIRE“ This is what could have been for the Manson 'Family' in Brooklyn. Discord reigns on Flaming Fire’s "Kentucky Shroud," a jarring cacophony of sounds manufactured by leader Patrick Hambrecht and his apostles (among them, his wife, Kate). There’s a lot of growling and groaning and angry spitting throughout the album, but somehow the Manson family-manqué manage to charm through their admittedly frightening veneer. ” - Nick Haramis, Black Book "If anything, Flaming Fire, a New York apocalyptic-cabaret supergroup, is the exact opposite of Polyphonic Spree: a red-clad horde sent to banish any mellow vibes such a namby-pamby group might have left behind from its show the previous evening. (Ahem!) They're the Jonestown answer to the Danielson Famile, the Mansonic answer to The Winans -- and the retort to any other uplifting, clap-your-hands gospel outfit you can name." - Manny Theiner, Pittsburgh City Paper "We're happy to announce that WFMU-stalwarts Flaming Fire have released a recording of a live set from the first show in the Free Music Series under a Creative Commons license! This is a grand experiment in independent, direct licensing. Together we're going to help prove that free licensing can help a band spread the word on the web. They're also wading in Radiohead waters by releasing these tracks on a new CD along with 5 other studio recordings, and they'll be selling them on the tour that they just kicked off this week. The album's called "Kentucky Shroud", and you can buy it on their website. (I've got a physical copy right here in my lap and my head wrapped in sound as I write - the album's incredibly good.)" - Marcus Estes, WFMU

Bowling For Dollars : A Preservationist History

OK, I think I've drummed this up enough, but we are having a Bowling Party Fundraiser for the St. Matthew's Food Pantry on Sunday. In addition to some live pin setters, there will also be live music by Any Day Parade, The Poconos, and DJ Cat Juggler. The Bowling takes place at Barrow Mansion, (83 Wayne Street btwn Jersey and Barrow) where in the 1890'ss two bowling lanes were built. Come and bowl for a great cause. $10 and also feel free to bring some canned goods and or non perishables for the Food Pantry.

Let me rewind though... and get back to History per se...

First, Tonight I am back DJ'ing at the Lamp Post. Yep, it's been many a month since I have had a night to myself. I'll be dressed in RED for the Chinese New Year. The rest of you rats come as you are since it is your year :). My Roomate DJ Bill McCamie is at Bar Majestic. Tonight is also the ART HOUSE at Art House Production. This spoken word event is hosted by St. Patrick. Finally, The always impeccable dressed Lismore is playing at Rebel as part of Fashion Week. The event is Free with RSVP and has a one-hour open bar.
